What I Stand For

I will fight to make sure the people of the 17th District have jobs that pay a living wage, quality healthcare they can afford, equitable schools, a clean environment, and the security to retire with dignity.

- Jorge Cabrera

Strengthening Our Economy

Senator Cabrera championed a bipartisan budget with over $600 million in tax cuts for Connecticut residents. In the budget, Senator Cabrera supported a cap on the car tax rate and created a child tax rebate for low and middle-income families. He voted to eliminate the income tax on pensions, annuity income and social security for seniors, making retiring in our state more affordable and allowing families to stay together. He increased the property tax credit to $300 and expanded eligibility to over 385,000 households.

Jorge remains committed to fiscal responsibility. He voted to create the largest rainy day fund in the state’s history while paying down long-term debt and protecting Connecticut from future economic emergencies.

Investing in Mental Health and Health Care

Jorge worked to improve access to high quality, affordable healthcare in Connecticut. He voted to make telehealth visits permanent, reduce the costs of prescription drugs and guarantee paid family leave. Jorge also voted to increase access to mental health care for Connecticut youth by increasing funding for school-based health centers.

EDUCATION

Senator Cabrera voted to expand access to Debt-Free Community College to thousands of students that now have the opportunity to get an education without being burdened by student debt. I also secured additional funds for our towns to help them provide high quality education to our students. Investing in our students and providing them with the resources and tools they need to learn gives them the best opportunity to succeed now and in the future.

Public Safety

Jorge is working to keep neighborhoods safe and delivering with the lowest crime rates in a decade. He fought to get our police departments the resources and training they need to strengthen public safety and get illegal guns off the streets. Jorge is also committed to getting dangerous, military-style weapons off the streets by supporting a ban on certain modifications, including bump stocks and high-capacity magazines.

Environment

All of our state’s residents deserve to breathe clean air and drink clean water. He supported a budget with $75 million in it to improve indoor air quality in our schools. These funds will be used to upgrade HVAC systems in our schools so students and teachers have clean air to breath while in schools. We provided additional funding for drinking water standards in school and to enhance the response to drinking water issues in school.

He also worked to cut litter and blight caused by glass bottles and voted to ban harmful chemicals known as PFAS. We must also continue to protect our environment and work toward a sustainable future.
